Quantum Computing – Opportunities and Perspectives for Chemistry

The 23rd Colloquium Chimicum will take place on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. Quantum computing is everywhere in the headlines – but how does the technology really work, and what does it mean for us as chemists? In talks from both research and industry, we take a look inside the black box. We explore the fundamentals, examine hardware development – and with it potential new markets for materials and processes – and show how quantum computers might be applied in pharmaceutical research and spectroscopy. All talks will be held in English.

The programme begins the day before: on Wednesday, 7 October, a guided tour of the "Quantum Effects" trade fair in Stuttgart offers a hands-on introduction to the subject. Our annual general meeting (held in German) will also take place that day. We will round off the evening with a shared dinner.

Quantum Computing – Chancen und Perspektiven für die Chemie

Das XXIII. Colloquium Chimicum findet am Donnerstag, den 8. Oktober 2026, am Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung in Stuttgart statt. Quantum Computing ist in aller Munde – doch wie funktioniert die Technologie wirklich, und was bedeutet sie für uns Chemikerinnen und Chemiker? In Vorträgen aus Forschung und Industrie werfen wir einen Blick in die Black Box. Wir beleuchten die Grundlagen, betrachten die Hardware-Entwicklung – und damit potenziell neue Märkte für Materialien und Verfahren – und zeigen, wie Quantencomputer in der Pharmaforschung und Spektroskopie eingesetzt werden könnten. Die Vorträge werden auf Englisch gehalten.

Das Programm beginnt bereits am Vortag: Am Mittwoch, den 7. Oktober, erwartet uns als Einstieg in die Materie eine Führung über die Messe „Quantum Effects" in Stuttgart. Ebenso findet unsere jährliche Mitgliederversammlung statt. Den Abend lassen wir bei einem gemeinsamen Essen ausklingen.
