Dear Sir or Madam,

we would like to draw your attention to the MCPD Symposium on esters and glycidyl esters which will be held in Berlin, Germany on 21st –22nd May 2019, organized by the German Society for Fat Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Fettwissenschaft e. V.; DGF) and supported by the Association of the Oilseed crushing and Oil refining Industry in Germany (OVID Verband der ölsaatenverarbeitenden Industrie in Deutschland e. V.) as well as the German Federation for Food Law and Food Science (Bund für Lebensmittelrecht und Lebensmittelkunde e. V.; BLL).

The first international symposium on MCPD esters and glycidyl esters was held in Berlin in June 2017 with overwhelming interest shown by participants from over 30 countries worldwide. The final conclusion of this symposium was that after ten years of research a great step forward has already been done in reducing the levels of the esters in edible fats and oils, but that there is still some work to do. We learned about the progress made in analytical methods for oils and composite food, biomarkers to follow the way of glycidol in human blood, the toxicological assessment of the esters but also about mitigation strategies. Open questions in 2017 remain e.g. a deeper understanding of the toxicology of the esters, more research on precursors, mitigation strategies in the cultivating countries, the validation of methods for composite food and also a regulatory approach for the esters.

At the end of 2018 we believe that the situation has changed. This is not only due to the introduction of a legal limit for glycidyl esters in the EU and the discussions about a limit for 3-MCPD esters but also as a result of further progress made in different fields of research. Today new insights into the toxicology of the esters exist and there are also further validated analytical methods for composite food available. Automated systems for analysis were introduced promising a faster and cheaper determination of the esters. New approaches for the mitigation of the esters are also available (e.g. prediction of ester levels in the crude oil; innovative removal of free fatty acids from the crude oil to lower the temperature during deodorization).

The aim of the 2nd symposium is to give an up-date on the status and knowledge of all aspects of MCPD esters and glycidyl esters in oils and food. More than ten years after the first findings of 3-MCPD esters in vegetable fats & oils, qualified experts will discuss relevant aspects of formation and mitigation during oil and food processing, new developments in analytics and the toxicological assessment of the esters and approaches taken for their regulation.

The symposium aims to reach all interested parties, e.g. people from oil and food processing industry, trade, official and private laboratories, but also decision-makers and authorities, people responsible for consumer protection, nutritionists and from the scientific press.

Please save the date for the 2nd symposium on MCPD esters and glycidyl esters on 21st – 22nd May 2019 in Berlin, Germany, Seminaris CampusHotel.

Should you wish to present a poster, please follow the instructions under "abstract submission"
